One thing that surprises me is the fact that most people do not breathe properly. When I found out about this, it somehow made a lot of sense because I remember being taught breathing exercises in counselling sessions. At that time, I didn’t think much of it, and I initially thought it was a way to calm anxiety. However, now it somehow clicked in my head, and it made complete sense of why I was being taught the proper technique to breathe.
We are all born with the ability to breathe. It’s the most basic thing that our body just naturally and automatically does. I know what some people are thinking, “how can we be breathing wrongly?” but it is a known fact that most people may unconsciously forget to breathe correctly. It’s not that we did it wrong, but in my opinion, we are just not actively thinking about it. As I said before, it is an automatic function of the body, and because of this, we became unconscious of the way we breathe.
Sometimes we are too caught up in the midst of chaos and difficulty; we find ourselves feeling suffocated even though we are breathing. Have you ever wondered why sometimes, no matter how much time we spend on coming up with a solution, our mind seems to be too distraught to come up with a solution? Often in a state where we feel stressed out, we take shallow breaths. While it may be enough to keep us alive, it can negatively affect our health and well-being. Our body goes into “fight or flight” mode and increases the stress hormones in our body. So, doesn’t it make a lot of sense why it seems like we forget to breathe in times of panic?
Most of us rarely take deep breaths, only drawing just the minimal air into our lungs. We developed shallow breathing as a result because our minds are focused on other things. There are a lot of scientific studies that stress the importance and benefits of deep breathing. It lowers the stress in our body and helps us to calm down. It is easy to practice breathing exercises, and you can do it whenever and wherever you are. A simple search on the internet can help guide you on proper breathing techniques.
You’d be surprised to know that there are a lot of classes conducted just for breathing exercises. So if you find yourself in a stressful situation or stuck, don’t forget to breathe. It’s always easier to find a solution with a calm and rational mind.
